The Department of English at Māngere College teaches incremental, transferrable reading and writing skills that lay the foundation for deep level and transformational thinking as our learners (ākonga) make their journey through English. Our reciprocal reading programme is designed to help our ākonga become confident, independent readers and critical thinkers. Our writing programme is designed to help our ākonga write confidently across a range of writing styles. We encourage our ākonga to express their ideas in an oral language context and we offer extracurricular opportunities to join our debating and spoken word teams. We respect and value our ākonga culture and heritage and insure that we reflect this through culturally responsive language and literature connecting to the wider world. We aspire to be transformational teachers (kaiako) who foster relationships with high expectations (whanaungatanga) to nurture curiosity through integrity, trust, sincerity and equity (manaakitanga).
