The Language Department
The Language Department at Māngere College encourages exploration of one’s own language and culture. Our learning area puts students' ability to communicate at the centre by making Communication the core strand. This strand is supported by developing the linguistic and cultural awareness needed for communicative competence.
- students learn to use the language to make meaning
- students learn about culture and the interrelationship between culture and language
- students study the language in order to understand how it works
Within our department, we encourage students to find their fullest potential through whanaungatanga, tautoko, tika & pono. All students take a language in Year 9 and continue through till year 10 and in Year 11, 12 and 13 they are able to choose to continue to take it as an option. We teach across the department in themes as you can see below.
Term 1
Myself & My Family
Term 2
My Culture & Identity
Term 3

Term 4

The 5 different Languages we teach here are Te Reo Māori, Cook Islands Māori, Lea Faka Tonga, Gagana Samoa and Mandarin.
